Specialist Oxygen Nurse Maureen recently joined Baywater Healthcare. She has shared with us what her role entails and what skills are essential to be successful in her role.
I have been in nursing since 1986. I became a nurse following my mum’s career. She inspired me so much.
As a specialist oxygen nurse, I assess patients at home for oxygen therapy and ensure they are safe using the equipment. I take blood to check levels and alter the oxygen flow rate accordingly. I also take part in running clinics and access for ambulatory oxygen while completing all the relevant paperwork.
Critical skills in my role are conducting each individual patient assessment, taking CBG (Capillary Blood Gas) observations, and completing referrals.
