Cylinders

If you are experiencing no or limited flow, please follow the advice below:

  • Check the cylinder is switched on properly and set to the correct flow rate
  • Check nasal prong tubing for kinks, splits or blockages
  • Check the contents gauge to ensure the cylinder is not empty
  • If using a micro flow or low flow valve, ensure that they are securely fitted, and that the nasal prongs or mask are connected correctly.

If the problem persists, please call us on 0800 373 580.

Conservers

When breathing in using a conserver, you should hear a hissing noise. If this noise cannot be heard, or no oxygen can be felt coming from the conserver, please follow the advice below:

If you still can’t hear a hissing noise or feel that oxygen is not coming from the conserver, please remove the conserver and connect the nasal prongs directly to the cylinder. The cylinder should be set to the flow rate as directed by your Healthcare Professional. Please call us on 0800 373 580.

Conserver alarms

Low battery – an intermittent alarm will sound; please change your batteries.

Low oxygen pressure – check cylinder contents to ensure there is enough oxygen to use the conserver. If this does not resolve the alarm, check the curly blue tubing has no kinks.

Disconnection or apnoea alarm – this indicates that the conserver is not detecting when you are taking a breath. Check your nasal prongs are not blocked or kinked. If this does not resolve the problem, please remove the conserver, connect your nasal prongs directly to the cylinder and use at the flow instructed by your Healthcare Professional. Please call your Healthcare Professional for advice.

If the problem persists, please call us on 0800 373 580.

Oxygen machines

What to do if the oxygen machine’s alarm sounds

If the alarm sounds after the oxygen machine has been switched on and doesn’t stop after a few seconds, please check that the electric socket it is plugged into is switched on. If it is switched on, please switch the oxygen machine off and back on again.

If the oxygen machine continues to alarm:

Check the tubing from the oxygen machine to the nasal prongs or mask to ensure nothing is lying on it that could be blocking the oxygen flow.

What to do if no oxygen is being provided

If you use a small amount of oxygen, it may feel as if there is no oxygen coming out of the machine.

If oxygen cannot be felt from the nasal prongs or mask, check that the flow setting is correct on the oxygen machine. If the flow setting on the oxygen machine is set to zero and you cannot turn it up, call us for further guidance.

If the flow settings are correct, you can remove the nasal prongs and place the tubing into a glass of water to see if bubbles are created; this indicates oxygen is reaching the nasal prongs or mask. If no bubbles are created, please check the oxygen tubing for holes or splits.

If the problem persists, please call us on 0800 373 580.

Liquid oxygen tanks

What to do if the liquid level meter is flashing

The battery may need to be changed, or some condensation has got into the meter. Inform the Healthcare Technician when swapping over the tank on your next delivery.

What to do if there is frosting on the coil of the tank

This is normal when filling portable flasks. If it continues after filling has been completed, please contact us on 0800 373 580.

Frosting on the side of the tank

Please contact us on 0800 373 580.

What to do if liquid oxygen is escaping from the fill point

The fill connector may have frozen open. Open windows if possible to allow the room to ventilate and evacuate the area immediately. Please contact us on 0800 373 580.

To prevent the escape of liquid, always wipe the outlet nozzle with a lint-free cloth before and after filling the portable.

What to do if there is a hissing noise from the tank

The relief valve will occasionally open to relieve pressure during regular use, especially after filling the portable flask. If the hissing continues, it could indicate a leak. Call us if it does not stop within 10 minutes or seems to be hissing a lot.

If the problem persists, please call us on 0800 373 580.

Liquid oxygen portable flasks

What to do if the portable flask is making a hissing sound

Hissing can occur to maintain the correct pressure inside the flask. It is most likely to hiss after filling or when the position of the portable flask is changed. Hissing can last for approximately 10 minutes after filling. It can occur when the flow control valve is at a low setting. If the portable flask has been laid down in an improper position, stand it back upright and allow several minutes for the unit to settle.

What to do if the flow stops during use

Ensure that the nasal prongs are firmly attached to the oxygen outlet and that the tubing is not kinked. Check the contents indicator and fill the portable flask if needed. Ensure the flow control is not in the off (0) position.

What to do if the portable flask vent valve does not close properly at the end of the filling process

If the vent valve fails to close and a hissing sound and oxygen cloud continues, carefully remove the portable flask by pressing the release button on the tank. Steam from the bottom of the portable flask will stop after a few minutes. Allow the flask to warm until you can close the vent valve. The portable flask may require up to 60 minutes to build enough pressure for oxygen to flow correctly.

What to do if the portable flask does not release from the tank after filling

The portable flask and tank fill connectors may have become frozen. DO NOT USE FORCE. Allow a few minutes for the frozen parts to warm, then press the portable release to remove the portable flask. To prevent the flask and tank from freezing together, always wipe the fill connector on the tank and the portable flask with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth before filling.

If the problem persists, please call us on 0800 373 580.

Alarms

If the alarm should sound other than after it has been switched on, or if it doesn’t stop alarming after a few seconds, check the electric wall socket is switched on. If it is, switch the oxygen machine off and back on again. If it continues to alarm, check the filter isn’t blocked or dusty. Check the tubing from the oxygen machine to the nasal prongs or mask to ensure nothing is blocking the tubing. If these checks do not help, please call us for further guidance.

What to do if oxygen can’t be felt from the nasal prongs or mask

Check the flow tube to see if the setting is correct and check the dial setting is correct. Please note that a mask should not be used with the portable cylinders. If the flow setting on the flow tube is set to zero and you cannot turn it up, call us for further guidance.

How to test the flow

To test flow from an oxygen machine, you can place the oxygen tubing into a glass of water to see if bubbles are created; if there are, this indicates that oxygen is being produced. If no bubbles are created, please check the oxygen tubing for signs of holes or splits. If you cannot resolve the problem, please call us on 0800 373 580 for further guidance.

What to do if no flow can be felt coming from the oxygen cylinder

Check that the tubing has no holes or kinks and is correctly connected to the cylinder nozzle. Check the cylinder gauge to ensure the cylinder is not empty.

If the problem persists, please call us on 0800 373 580.
